The most obvious benefit of QRP operation is the reduced energy consumption that is a hallmark of a QRP transceiver. QRP transceivers naturally use much less energy than other ham radio transceivers so if energy is a concern QRP is definitely the way to go. Reduced energy consumption also allows many QRP transceivers to run off of a battery instead of being plugged into a wall outlet. While operating QRP instead of using full power isn’t likely to save you hundreds of dollars on your electric bill in the energy conscious age that we live in every bit of energy saved and not wasted matters.
Another great benefit of QRP transceivers is that they tend to be very small and portable. These portable QRP transmitters can be taken to almost any location so that you can take advantage of better atmospheric conditions or maybe even better scenery. Another benefit of QRP is that it tends to be much less expensive than high power ham radio due to the simple fact that the QRP transmitters are much easier to build and repair than your run of the mill commercial radio. This is especially true with homebrew systems since most QRP operators know their custom transmitter like the back of their hand. If a QRP radio breaks down and quits works at the same time as a high powered radio chances are the QRP transceiver will be much easier to fix thanks in part to the cheap price of spare parts, the simplistic design, and the advanced knowledge of most QRP operators.
As an enjoyable hobby, the spiritual and mental benefit of QRP operation should not be overlooked. Although it can be trying at times a resounding majority of QRP operators feel like working with their QRP transceiver helps them to relieve stress and relax. For others, QRP serves as an outlet for pent up energy and ambition that have no other place to go. We all need a hobby to keep us going insane and for some people their hobby is sitting down in front of their QRP transmitter and talking with someone that is hundreds or maybe even thousands of miles away.
While some QRP operators tout QRP as being more environmentally friendly than high power radio the difference is so negligible that it really will have no lasting effect. Although, if you want to go QRP because of the benefits to the environment most QRPers will take the “more power to you” approach and help you any way they can. If you are looking for benefits of QRP in order to convince yourself that you should make the jump from standard ham radio operation there are plenty of them for you to find but in the end the only benefit that matters is the one that pertains to you. If you feel like using a QRP transmitter is making even the slightest positive impact on your life, or even your stress level and mood, you have all the reason in the world to take the plunge permanently into QRP!
